Mungret College Annual Dinner and Golf Report 2019
The attendance at this years annual dinner and golf outing attracted the highest turn out, outside of the events held in the college, with 70 sitting for dinner. When it would be expected, given the age profile of colleagues to reduce in numbers, the opposite is happening and long may it continue. The class of 1969 who were celebrating their 50thanniversary turned up in sizeable numbers which is a credit to them.
Held this year at our new venue in the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel the reception from the management and staff was top class and the feedback on both the accommodation and the food was very complimentary.
The day kicked off with our annual golf competition held once again at Castletroy Golf Club and played in very pleasant conditions. The Fr. Senan Timoney Mungret Cup was transported across the seas to the United States in the hands of Michael Lynch who prevailed with a very good score of 38pts. Runner up was Karl Roche on 37pts with third place filled by Ciaran Smyth on a similar score. The front nine went to Paul Malone and the back nine going to Billy Moloney.
The AGM was held back in the hotel under the guidance of our President Michael O’Malley and was very well attended. Our new President elect for 2020 is Willie Nash and we look forward to working with him in the New Year.
Dinner followed and our president welcomed our guests from our sister colleges Belvedere, Gonzaga, Crescent and Clongowes. Also invited was Liam O’Mahoney principal of the new Mungret Community College, William Sheehan of the Mungret Christian Centre, Nessan O’Donoghue of the Mungret Historic Centre and Tom Cassidy Limerick City Council.
Our annual bursary to assist with the educational needs of pupils at the Community College was presented to Liam O’Mahoney principal.
The festivities continued well into the night but that wasn’t the end of our weekend adventure.
Invitations were extended by all of the above mentioned guests to visit the college the following morning with access all areas. A very large group of past pupils were given an extensive tour which included the temporary facilities of the new Community College which are enormous. The new college is waiting for the sod to be lifted on their new premises on the site of the old Mungret farm, which we understand, is imminent. It is a credit to everyone that plans have been drawn up to improve and renovate the old school and evidence of this was there to see. Again we appreciate all the personal time given by the above to ensure that the tour was a great success. The future is in very safe hands.
Finally our date for our next event will be decided shortly and will be circulated to all past pupils well in advance. The event will continue to be held in Sept with the class of 1970 celebrating their 50th so work starts now for them.
