President’s message delivered at book-launch re. Bishop David Cremin (past pupil 1947-’51) and staged at The Library, Desmond Complex, Newcastlewest,Co. Limerick, 5th June 2008
It is with considerable pleasure that the membership of Mungret College SJ. Limerick PPU has learned of the imminent publication and launch of an autobiographical account of Most Rev Dr. David Cremin DD, Auxiliary Bishop Emeritus of the Metropolitan Diocese of Sydney, Australia and Titular Bishop of Cunga Féichin.
His Lordship received his secondary education at Mungret College, Limerick. Following on from this he carried out his philosophy studies for the priesthood at the Apostolic School attached to the college. The council and members of the Mungret Union are delighted to have an association with the honour bestowing Bishop David on the publication of the book ‘Call Me David’ by Fr.John McSweeney.
Bishop David, during his time in Sydney, steadfastly conveyed to Australians at large an admirable profile and understanding of the subject of Irish Nationalism during its most recent critical forty years of Irish Troubles. This together with such distinguished service to the Church and to those under his pastoral care-plus his ‘grá’ for the Newcastlewest area and Ireland-from which he hailed-makes him truly deserving of this accolade here today.
On behalf of the Council and entire membership of the Mungret College PPU I offer wholehearted congratulations to His Lordship on the launching of this book and wish it and himself continued success long into the future.
Cecil Naughton KCHS
