Mungret College Annual Dinner and Golf report September 2022
This years event which was hosted by our president Judge Tom O’Donnell (1971 )was held again in the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel, Castletroy on Friday the 8th Sept when yet again attendance records were broken. The day commenced with the golf competition at Nenagh G.C. results of which, have already been posted. However the excitement was not only confined to the scores on the day. It relates to two brothers, a golf buggy and the only water hazard on the course. Whilst putting on the green to their astonishment their buggy which was parked on a slight incline decided to take on a life of its own and reverse back down the hill unaccompanied straight into the pond surrounding the green. With their golf bags semi submerged and despite the trojan efforts of the ground staff to retrieve them all seemed lost, until by divine intervention, the affable Golf Club manager Tom Donaghy appeared on the scene very quickly with a replacement buggy and the day was saved. You couldn’t write it.
Dinner and the AGM was held back in the hotel where 78 past pupils and guests sat down. The class of 1972 were celebrating their 50th anniversary and turned up in great numbers thanks to class mate Tom O’Neill and colleagues who put in great work to get most of their year back. Indeed it was heartening to see pupils who celebrated their anniversaries in the last few years return for this event. It is all winding up well for the mega 50th anniversary of the closing of the college in 2024 which once again will be held back in the school hopefully.
The chain of office was handed over to our new president for this year Frank Wall class of 1967. Frank is following on from his late father Frank Snr who was one of the founding member of the Union and is the reason we are all enjoying this annual event. A presentation was made to Liam O’Mahoney Principal of the new Mungret Community College with an increased bursary directed to students who require financial assistance. We also appreciate the Community College opening their doors to a walk about on Saturday morning for colleagues. Thanks also to William Sheehan of the Christian Centre for providing access to the west wing of the school.
The event was a tremendous success and there is a new influx of youth attending which is great to see. As mentioned on the night they are the future of the Union and long may this support continue.
The dates for the 2023 event has been agree by council and will be held on Friday the 1st September 2023 at the Kilmurray Lodge Hotel, Castletroy, Limerick preceded by the annual golf competition which will take place at Nenagh G.C. They have forgiven us for last year’s shenanigans.
Please place this date in your diaries and await further details on booking which should be emailed to you in late July. Please also note that we have moved from our normal second Friday to the 1st Friday as a result of the Rugby World Cup with some of our past pupils attending. It felt prudent to try and accommodate everyone with this slight change in date .
